Alex is mostly self-taught. He did not attend the music conservatoires that many of his peers went to, however great pianists have always been on hand to guide him through the process of becoming a professional musician, most notably Nick Ramm and John Donaldson.

Alex does not sight-read but has an incredible ear. He can learn and write tunes with music scores.

Classical pianist Marion Blech taught Alex during his teenage years.
